If you're a regular Tribe Member then you know that I L-O-V-E working with teens struggling with self-harming behaviors! Not because I'm some kind of weird freak or anything, but because I love watching the transformation that takes place in teens when they feel supported, valued + loved! There is beauty + power in vulnerability! There's something special that happens when the teen has struggled for so long + finally finds their tribe of supporters!
So you finally have come around to the fact that maybe you need a bit of support for this season of your life. CHECK! You've worked up the nerve to actually Google a Therapist or search on Psychology Today. CHECK! But how the heck do you decide which one might actually mesh with your personality??
Have you ever been hospitalized for a physical ailment? Were you ashamed to be headed to the hospital? Were you made fun of for getting injured or feeling sick? Did you push past the taunts that you were "whining" about the ailment to get what you needed? If you answered yes to any of these questions, how is psychiatric hospitalization any different? I can see many of you now nervous, because of thoughts like "What if I did have to be hospitalized for being crazy?" or "I was hospitalized, but I don't want anyone to know..." The reason you feel like that is because there is a heavy stigma attached to mental illness + I'm on a mission to break that stigma!
I'm sure you've heard all of these myths surrounding suicide before. You may have even been the one who said/thought it. My goal in this series is to break the stigma surrounding mental illness. It's considered a taboo area + many times the only ones who are brave enough to touch on it are mental health professionals. While this is awesome to have professional support, it means nothing if people are too nervous to speak out + share their survival story.
